How hybrid systems work
A hybrid (or dual-fuel) system pairs a heat pump with your existing gas furnace. The heat pump handles most of your heating — it's more efficient down to about -10°C to -15°C. On the coldest days, the system automatically switches to your gas furnace.
The result? You get the efficiency and cooling of a heat pump, plus the peace of mind of gas backup. And since you're keeping your furnace, you qualify for the $5,000 FortisBC dual-fuel rebate.
Heat Pump Primary
The heat pump runs most of the time — typically handling 80-90% of your heating hours at much higher efficiency than gas.
Gas Backup
When temperatures drop below the switchover point, your furnace kicks in automatically. No action needed.
Lower Bills
You get heat pump efficiency most of the time, with gas only when it makes economic sense. Best of both worlds.
Peace of Mind
Never worry about extreme cold snaps. Your gas furnace is there if you need it, but most days you won't.
